Pictures of WCA members

Would it be possible for people or organizations to submit pictures of competitors?
They could be stored in the database as a profile element.
Goals:
- Generate a nice looking WCA ID card, virtual and physical, for fun, including picture and stats.
- More important: could be useful in competitions. You all know judges waste a lot of time looking and calling for competitors they don't know.
Now with the automatic registration feature, it should be possible to print all competition sheets needed for all events in a competition, and it would be even better with a picture of the competitors.
Gilles.

I think this is a bad idea. An ID card for all cubers, in the first instance is an impractical operation to execute, in the second instance is a quite unnecessary invasion of privacy.

I think it's a nice idea. But of course it should not be obliged for all competitors, just the ones who have no problem against it.
A competitor ID card thing would look really pro

I wouldn't mind a nice fancy WCA ID card. Not required, because like Dene said, it's a privacy issue. However, if the competitor consents to it, it would be nice to see a face to go with the name (and times) on your WCA profile.

Yeah, I agree. I would really love to be able to know who some people are before I've ever seen them, it would be a great help in judging (and also WCA IDs would look really cool). Instead of printing, maybe we could have people hand their ID card to the organizer when they register for a competition (and of course get it back whenever they leave), so that that way (1) the organizers would have an easy way to confirm who showed up and who has left, and (2) if they needed to know the face of anyone at the competition they could quickly check without having to have a color printer on hand.
I'm actually not sure about the privacy consideration. If you are fine with going to a competition without a full-face mask on, you've already implicitly given your consent to other cubers to be able to look at your head. I've been to 15 or so competitions and I have never seen anyone complain that other people are allowed to look at their face... So I can't see why a currently active cuber would not want their face on their WCA profile. Of course we should still ask, just in case someone has retired or something and they don't want people to see them, but I don't expect many people at all to say no.

qqwref: It's more a matter of the fact that ones face will be openly displayed in a public batabase. I mean, if people cared THAT much about their identity they would wear a mask at all times.
By playing Tekken does that implicitly consent Namco to a picture of my face?

playing at home or playing at a competition?

A competiton, if you must.

How about putting also putting a picture + age + city + whatever 'card' like thing on a cubers' WCA ID page?

The second statement you made is exactly what I'm saying - I don't see how people could have a problem with their face being displayed, precisely because they voluntarily display their face in cubing competitions anyway. Competitions are open to spectators and anyone could come to one and see the face of any cuber at that competition, so a competition is just as public as a database is.
Just playing Tekken privately does not give Namco the right to a picture of your face. But if you stage a public demonstration and allow any spectators or media to come and watch/videotape you playing it (without a mask)... then, yes, I think you are implying that you are fine with anyone seeing your face. Of course it would still be a problem if Namco (or the WCA) were to make money using a picture of your face without giving you royalties, but this issue couldn't possibly come up since the WCA database is free for all.

I like the idea of ALLOWING members to add a photograph to the WCA database and have it available on the WCA website.
I do not like the idea YET to make it a REQUIREMENT for WCA members.
Our website team will look into it.

You might want to check to make sure whether or not you need parental permission to put a name with a face if the person is underage.

If your over 18 you don't need permission to do anything.
If under 18 you should need just a parental signature.
