WCA Statement Regarding James Molloy
Dear WCA Community,
We regret to inform you of a serious incident that has come to our attention.
Recently, the former Treasurer of the World Cube Association (WCA) and former President of the UK Cube Association (UKCA), James Molloy, admitted to misappropriating UKCA funds. Although the exact sum is yet to be determined, we want to emphasize the seriousness of this issue, whilst assuring you that immediate action has been taken. Our foremost priority has been to ensure the security of WCA funds along with conducting an initial review into the WCA’s financials. Our initial review has concluded there is no evidence that the WCA’s financials have been impacted.
We understand the impact and significance of this incident, and the WCA is here to support the UKCA, one of our largest Regional Organizations. We are glad to report that the UKCA remains financially resilient and has confirmed ALL upcoming competitions will go ahead as planned.
With immediate effect, we have removed James Molloy from all WCA positions including Treasurer, WCA Financial Committee (WFC) Leader and Delegate. James has also been banned from competing at any WCA competition until a full investigation of the situation has been conducted. UKCA has removed James from the organization and revoked all of his administrative access.
We are aware of the seriousness of this incident and are doing all we can to resolve it. Both the WCA and UKCA have always been volunteer-led organizations both operating on a non-profit basis, and we will continue to uphold these principles. We will be supporting the UKCA who have expedited plans to transition the UKCA into a newly incorporated limited company as a result of this incident.
The WCA Board and WCA Ethics Committee (WEC) will be conducting a thorough investigation into the events that occurred in the mismanagement of UKCA assets. Separately, we will conduct an in-depth audit of the WCA finances independent of any current WFC member, to ensure proper management of the WCA financials.
While we understand the significance of transparency, we must emphasize that due to the ongoing investigation, the Board, WFC and WEC cannot participate in any additional discussions until the investigation reaches its conclusion.
