Information

There are two competitions being held in Central Square at St. Mary Orthodox Church on June 1st: this competition, An Afternoon in Central Square 2024, in the afternoon, and A Morning in Central Square 2024 in the morning. These are not series competitions. You may sign up for either or both.

A Morning in Central Square will have 3x3, 2x2, and pyraminx.
An Afternoon in Central Square will have Square-1, 5x5, Clock, and 3x3 Blindfolded.

This competition is recognized as an official World Cube Association competition. Therefore, all competitors must be familiar with the WCA Regulations. If you are new to competing, please refer to the Competitor Information tab.

Spectators can attend for free and can come and go as they please! No registration or check-in process is needed for spectating.

Please provide adult supervision for children under 12 years of age.

Before You Register:

All prospective registrants need a WCA account. New competitors can create their own WCA account by clicking here and entering the required information.

How to Register Online:

Prospective competitors register by:
1. Signing into their WCA account;
2. Clicking "Register" on the left side of this webpage, selecting the events they would like to compete in, and submitting their registration;
3. Paying the registration fee of $15.00. (The registration fee is the same regardless of how many events are selected.) Your registration is not complete until you have paid the registration fee.

The competitor limit for this competition is 50. The list of approved competitors can be found by clicking "Competitors" on the left side of this webpage. If there are already 50 competitors on that list, it means the competition is full, and any future registrants will be placed on the waitlist.

Additionally, at the door registration and payment will be accepted.

Any requested changes to registration at or before Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST will be honored. Your registration is not complete until your name shows up on the list.

How to Pay for Registration Online:

Payment is processed through Stripe. Click on the "Register" tab on the left side of the webpage to register and pay all in one place! You can start the payment process by clicking "Pay your fees with card."

Refunds:

Approved competitors who cancel their registration at or before Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST are eligible for a refund for half (50%) of their registration cost. After this date, no refund requests will be honored. Attempting to file a chargeback for the registration fee will lead to being blacklisted from future WCA events.

Waitlist Information:

We will be keeping a waitlist for this competition. To secure a place on the waitlist once 50 competitors have paid, simply pay the registration fee. If a competitor emails us to drop out at or before Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST, you will be notified if you are the next competitor on the waitlist. After that deadline, all remaining competitors on the waitlist will be emailed letting them know they did not get off the waitlist and will be fully refunded.

For First-Time Competitors:

All newcomers must be familiar with the WCA Regulations before competing. This video gives a basic overview of the rules.

For All Competitors:

Groups and and a link to live results will be sent out to all competitors in the pre-competition email.

When you arrive, you will receive a card with personalized information detailing your events and what group you will be competing in for each event. In addition, you will also have judging/scrambling assignments on your card. Every competitor is expected to help out during the event(s) they are registered for. The card will look like the following:

Getting to Massachusetts:
* Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is the closet airport to Central Square. MBTA Silver Line and Blue Line services are accessible from Logan to the rest of Boston and other areas served by the MBTA, including direct service to Central Square on the Red Line.
* A number of bus lines (Greyhound, Megabus, etc.) have service to Boston. Consult Google Maps for public transportation from drop off points.
* Amtrak also has service on Acela Express and Northeast Corridor routes to Boston South Station. Connections are available there to the MBTA Red Line.

Driving to Central Square, Cambridge:
* We suggest using Google Maps for directions to St. Mary Orthodox Church at 8 Inman St., Cambridge, MA. Please see the Parking tab for directions on parking in Central Square. Please keep in mind that a large number of streets in Central Square, including Inman Street, are one-way only and may require some maneuvering.

Public Transportation to Central Square:
* Take the MBTA Red Line to Central. The venue is a 3-minute walk from the station.

Food:
* Lunch will not be provided to competitors, but Central Square is home to dozens of great restaurants and cafés.

All competitors will be expected to judge and scramble throughout the day. If you would like to join the volunteer staff, you may apply to do so at this link. Staff members are expected to spend the majority of the day volunteering, and will receive free registration and lunch.

This competition is organized by Cube New England, a group dedicated to growing the speedcubing community in New England, USA.

Time limit

If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).

Cutoff

The result to beat to proceed to the second phase of a cutoff round (see Regulation 9g).

Format

The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
