Competitor Duties
If this isn't your first competition, you will be assigned some judging and/or running duties throughout the competition. You will only be assigned these tasks in events that you're competing in. If you don't know how to judge or run, make sure to come to the competitor tutorial at the start of the competition.
Your scheduled duties will be on the back of your name tag (explained in the competitor tutorial), so please be aware of when you're expected to come up and help. This is required to keep the competition running smoothly and on time, since it is purely run by volunteeers. For non-first rounds (ie 3x3x3 round 2) there are no assigned duties, so if you see an empty judging seat then please come up and fill it.
Your competition schedule, which includes all rounds you're competing and staffing in will also be available at Competition Groups about a week before the competition. The link above will be updated during that time, and if you are a confirmed registrant, you will receive a pre-competition email which will contain an updated link to Burnaby Basics 2024's Competition Groups page, among other useful information.
We also ask that you keep the venue as tidy as possible as possible - please put garbage/recycling/etc in the appropriate bins when you're leaving.
If you need help or are confused about any of these duties, just ask an organizer or an experienced competitor and they can explain.
Unofficial Event - TeamBLD
TeamBLD is an unofficial event which will be held during lunch time at Burnaby Basics 2024. As an unofficial event, these solves will not be recorded on your WCA profile, but results from this event will be updated on this page after the competition.
To register for TeamBLD please go to this link once the registration for the competition is opened. Only one teammate will need to submit a registration form.
What is TeamBLD?
The idea of TeamBLD is you will solve a cube blindfolded with a guidance from your teammate, hence the name, TeamBLD. You do NOT need to know a blindfolded method such as Old-Pochmann or 3-Style for this event. The event will be hosted as a Best-of-3 format, meaning the best time will be ranked.
You must delegate (assign) one competitor as the "caller" (the one telling the blindfolded competitor what to do) and the "solver" (the one with the blindfold executing the solution). After each attempt you may change roles if you would like. The "caller" may use any method to communicate with the "solver" as many times as they would like.
At the competition, competitors must bring a blindfold to compete in TeamBLD. When both competitors says they are ready, the judge will lift the cube cover and normal WCA inspection will begin. Before the judge lifts the cover, the "solver" must have the blindfold down, but sight blockers are not necessary for this event. The "solver" will then, using the assistance of the "caller" attempt to solve the cube.
If you have any questions about the format, feel free to contact us.

Head-to-Head 3x3 FINALS
The final round of 3x3x3 Cube at Burnaby Basics 2024 will be held in a head-to-head format.
In a head-to-head format, all finalists for 3x3 will be brought to another room, and will come up to the main stage two at a time to complete their 5 solves. The average is calculated the same way as any other 3x3 round.
The order that they compete in will be based on the top 12 rankings during the 2nd round of 3x3. Ranks 12 and 11 will be the first two to compete, followed by ranks 10 and 9, and so on. As such, 3x3 finals will take around one hour to finish.
*If the competition is behind schedule, we will have a regular 3x3 final where all finalists compete at the same time. *
Click on the video below to see an example of a head-to-head final:
Video provided by Phillip Lewicki
Time limit
If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
Format
The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
