Overview
CubingUSA Heartland Championship 2025 will hold an unofficial “Tiered Team Relay” on Saturday night. This event, based on the Rubik’s Nations Cup from Worlds 2017, and other regional “States Relays” features teams of four competitors each. The team members can consist of any competitor attending the competition, but must include members of varying skill levels.
This “Tiered Team Relay” will be a new format for this event that has never been done before!
The event is a 4 cube relay knockout tournament. It will feature up to 16 teams of four cubers solving 3x3 head-to-head in a single-elimination bracket. Watch the 2019 Rubik's Nations Cup here for an example of how this works.
Registration/Team Requirements
- Registration will be open Sunday, June 1, 2025, and will close on Friday, August 8, 2025.
- There will be a limit of 16 teams. Team spots will be filled based on the order each registration is received. If we receive more than 16 team applications, additional teams will be put on a waiting list in the event we receive any cancellations prior to the close of registration.
- Each team must consist of four team members
- Competitors are responsible for putting together their own teams, and only one registration needs to be submitted per team.
- Each individual may only be on one team.
- The team must include one competitor with their best official WCA 3x3 average from each of the following ranges/tiers, as of June 1, 2025:
- Tier 1: Less than 10.00 seconds
- Tier 2: 10.00 and 14.99 seconds
- Tier 3: 15.00 and 19.99 seconds
- Tier 4: 20.00 seconds or higher
- Team members must be registered competitors for CubingUSA Heartland Championship 2025.
- If any adjustments need to be made to your registered team, please contact us via the contact link on the main page of the competition website.
Team/Competitor Requirements
- Team members should plan to check-in at the venue 15 minutes prior to the event on Saturday evening (event begins at 7:00pm; check-in at 6:45pm). Team captains will check-in and must confirm the entire team is in attendance.
- Competitors/Full Teams must be present for the event at least 10 minutes prior to the first match to allow for debriefing and questions. If a team has no-shows and there are no backup competitors present to fill vacant spots, they will be disqualified and the opposing team will receive a bye.
- Teams should remain at the competition area for the remainder of their participation in the event. Eliminated competitors/teams may leave or join the audience after their matches have ended.
- Teams will be able to practice/warm-up during other matches, but must stay in the competition area.
Team Event Regulations
- The competition format is a simple 16-team seeded knockout tournament.
- Each competitor will solve a single 3x3 cube, one after another. The winner of each match is determined by the fastest total time. In case of a tie, the winning team is determined by the fastest single. The winning team proceeds to the next round.
- All competitors must supply their own puzzle.
- Standard WCA penalties (e.g. misalignment, timer stops/starts) apply for the solves.
- Competitors on each team will solve their puzzles in order from the slowest to fastest competitor (Tier 4 will go first, Tier 3 will go second, Tier 2 third, and Tier 1 last).
- The competitors will lift their cube covers simultaneously and begin inspection, with the standard 8 and 12 calls being made. Once the 12 second call is made, the competitors must place the cube on the mat and put their hands on their timer, then the judge will begin a countdown. The first timer must be started once the judge says "Go!" The second, third, and fourth timers must be started only when the previous member has finished their solve and has put back the 2 hands on the timers. Penalty: disqualification of the attempt (DNF).
- The second, third, and fourth team members may continue inspecting while their teammate(s) are solving the cube, but must do so with their hands remaining on the timer.
- This is an unofficial team event, no results will be stored in the WCA database.
