Expectations and Clarifications
- You are expected to be familiar with the WCA Regulations and Guidelines. Article A is most important for speedsolving events
- You are required to help judge. You should judge for at least one group of every event you compete in. You may be assigned to judge throughout the day. You may be disqualified if you refuse to judge when asked.
- If you want a refresher on how to compete or judge, you can read the WCA Competitor Tutorial.
- You must NOT talk about scrambles or what specific algorithm(s) you did while the event is still in progress. This is considered cheating and grounds for disqualification (Regulation 2g3)
- Make sure all screens of any cameras or phones you have on the table are facing away from you and do not touch them during the attempt; otherwise, this will result in a DNF (Regulation 2i2). Electronic/bluetooth cubes (ex. Giiker cube, GOcube, GAN356i) are not permitted under the same regulation.
- Please treat the venue with respect. Pick up any trash, and leave the venue better than how you found it.
- We are not responsible for your belongings or puzzles. Keep track of your own belongings/puzzles and be respectful of others and their belongings.
Spectators/Families
- Please be mindful of how many people you bring with you to the competition. Space is limited.
- Flash photography is NOT allowed in the venue, as it is very distracting.
- Per University Policy, minors are required to be accompanied by an adult while on campus.
Accessibility
If you need an accommodation due to a disability, please contact the organization team at least 2 weeks before the competition. We are happy to work with you to the best of our ability.
Live Results & Schedule
- You can find live results for the competition on WCA Live. A few days after the competition, the results will be uploaded to WCA officially.
- We reserve the right to alter the schedule in any way. We may alter the number of competitors proceeding to the next round. We may eliminate a round altogether. This all depends on if we run ahead or behind of the planned schedule.
- We may start a round early. Please make sure you are at the venue at least 20 minutes prior to an event you are competing in.
- We will be using regulation 9p3 for all final rounds. If you are not present when a final starts, you will be withdrawn from that final.
Safety
Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Per University Policy. Delegates and organizers are NOT responsible for your child
The Organizers, WCA, SECI, and venue do not hold any responsibility or liability if you become ill or injured. You are attending this competition at your own risk.

For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!
We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...
First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations, found here:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/
This video will help explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know. It is highly suggested that parents watch this video as well.
A written competitor tutorial can be found here.
If you have any questions after this video, we will be having a new competitor tutorial in the morning of the competition. That would be the perfect time to ask those questions and clear up any confusion.
If you are stoked to compete and ready to sign up, head over to the registration tab, click register, and fill out the information it asks for. This will help you get set up the WCA's system and one step closer to your first official solve!
Additionally:
- Please bring some form of identification. This will be used to verify your name, birthday, and nationality. (something like a passport or school ID).
- Please be familiar with all of WCA's regulations, most importantly Article A. If you have any questions about the regulations, feel free to ask us.
- In each event we will have rounds. We will take the top competitors on to the subsequent rounds. After a round is completed, results will be entered into WCA Live. Your name will be highlighted if you made it to the next round.
- Each round will be divided into groups to help them run more efficiently. We will call the groups in order. Please bring your solved puzzle up to the station with your scorecard. We are allowed to deny you the ability to compete if you do not come up when your assigned group is called.

Registration
Question | Answer |
---|---|
I am not from North Carolina, can I still compete? | Yes! Anyone can compete from any region (including newcomers). However only North Carolina residents can be awarded title of North Carolina State Champion. |
Why am I not on the competitor list yet? I already signed up and paid! | Registrations are approved manually, so it may take some time for the organizers/WCA Delegates to see and accept your registration. If you still do not see your name on the competitor list 48 hours after submitting payment, please reach out via the contact link. Please note that if registration is already full when you register and pay, you will remain on the waiting list with a pending registration status until a spot opens up, which may take weeks or months if it happens at all. (All competitors on the waiting list who do not get a spot receive a full refund minus processing fees.) |
How do I change my events or cancel my registration? | You are able to change your own registered events for this competition on the Register tab. If you need to cancel your registration entirely, please reach out via the contact link and an organizer or WCA Delegate will handle your request. Please note that no refunds, cancellations, event changes, etc. can be processed after the deadlines listed on the General Info tab under "Registration Requirements". |
Are spectators or guests allowed to attend? Do they have to pay an entrance fee? | At this competition, there are no limits or fees for spectators or guests. You are welcome to attend as a friend/family member of a competitor or even just as a non-competitor who is interested in the event. |
At the Competition
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Do I use my own cubes to compete? | Yes, you are responsible for providing your own puzzles. Be sure to review Article 3 of the WCA regulations and confirm that your puzzles are competition legal before the event. Some examples of non-legal puzzles are electronic cubes (such as Giiker, GOcube, or GAN356i), cubes with carbon fiber stickers, cubes with more than one logo, and cubes with significantly damaged or missing stickers/pieces. |
Do I use my own timer to compete? | No, all equipment for the competition (timers, displays, etc.) is provided by the organizers/WCA Delegates. |
How fast do you have to be to compete? | Most events at this competition are open to all competitors, so as long as you are able to solve the puzzle within the time limit, you are fast enough to compete! However, some events at this competition do have qualification requirements that you have to meet by achieving certain results in another competition before a deadline. Please review the Events tab for all information on time limits and qualification requirements. |
What will the average age of competitors be? | Most competitors are between 10 and 25 years old, with the average age usually falling in the early to mid-teens. However, all ages are welcome - everyone can and should cube! |
Are competitors divided by gender/age/experience/any other distinction? | All competitors compete on the same even playing field and are recognized in the official WCA results without any distinction. However, we do plan to recognize the top female competitor and the fastest newcomer in 3x3 with special prizes! |
How do I know when/where exactly I will be competing? | About a week before the competition, your first round assignments will become available on Competition Groups, detailing when you will compete in each of your events and on which stage of the competition. (The nametag that you receive at check-in will also list those first round assignments.) If you advance to the next round in any event, information about group assignments for subsequent rounds will be added to Competition Groups before the round begins. Please be familiar with which group you are in and be ready to compete at least 20 minutes before your scheduled time - the competition may run ahead of schedule, and you may not be able to compete if you miss your group. |
What do I do while I'm not competing? | In addition to the groups you are assigned to compete in, you will also be assigned to judge throughout the competition. Your judging assignments will usually come immediately after you compete (though you are welcome and encouraged to judge as much as you want - it's a fun way to get right up in the middle of the action!) When you're not judging or competing, you'll probably want to hang out at the tables with other cubers and make some new friends! |
Can I leave in between rounds/go home early for the day if I don't have anything to compete in? | We hope you're having enough fun to stay through the whole competition, but you are welcome to leave in between rounds or leave early for the day. (Please return at least 20 minutes before the scheduled start time of the next round you plan to compete in just in case the competition is running ahead of schedule.) If you plan to leave early and are going to miss a subsequent round that you advanced to, please let the organizers know so they can accept someone else to the round in your place. |
Results
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Where do I find my results during the competition? | During the competition, you can see results on WCA Live as they are entered. Please note that all results are entered by hand and there may be delays depending on the availability of staff to enter data. |
How will I know if I made it to the next round? | As the results are entered on WCA Live, the competitors whose names are highlighted in dark green are the ones who will be advancing to the next round. (Names highlighted in light green are in a position to advance at the moment but still have the potential to be bumped out as more results are entered.) Please note that the advancing competitors are not 100% locked in until every competitor's results are entered - you can scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if anyone is still missing results. |
Where do I find my results after the competition? | Within a week of the end of the competition, the results of the competition will be uploaded on the main WCA website and will appear on your WCA profile. You will receive an email notification when this happens. |
If you have any other question about the competition that's not answered here, you can always reach out via the contact link and we'll get back to you shortly!
