The following information was sent out to competitors in multiple emails. Here it all is in one convenient place!

Competition Schedule and Initial Competing Assignments

  • The competition schedule shows when each round of each event is scheduled to take place - please note you can toggle between the calendar and table views of the schedule on the website to view the schedule however is easiest for you to understand.
  • Each round will be divided into smaller groups that will compete in order - group 1, then group 2, and so on. You can look up your name on the Competition Groups page for Southeast Championship and see what group you are assigned to compete in for the first round of each event and the estimated start time for that group. Your nametag that you receive at check-in will also list your first-round groups.
  • There will be four separate stages at this competition with groups competing simultaneously on all of them. Please make sure you note both your group number and stage color for each assignment to ensure you report to the correct location in the venue when your group is called up.
  • Throughout the competition, please plan to be present in the venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of each round you are competing in, regardless of the listed start time for your assigned group. We may run ahead of schedule or have to adjust group assignments at the last minute, and if you miss your assigned group we cannot guarantee you will be able to compete in a later one.

Live Results and Subsequent Rounds

  • Live results during the competition can be found on the WCA Live page for this competition. Once all results are entered for a round (i.e., there are no more competitors at the bottom of the page without any results entered), then the competitors whose names are highlighted will be moving on to the next round. If you advance to the next round of an event but have to leave before it begins, please let us know before you leave so we can offer your spot to the next person.
  • Group assignments for subsequent rounds of each event will be created after all results are entered for the previous rounds, and they will become available on Competition Groups as they are uploaded. Please note that the groups for subsequent rounds may be revised over time up until the round in question begins, so please double-check your group assignment at that time to ensure you still know when and where to compete.

Judging Assignments and Expectations

  • In addition to groups in which you will compete, you will also be assigned to judge in certain groups throughout the competition. These assignments are also listed on Competition Groups for first rounds and will be added for subsequent rounds throughout the competition. If you are unfamiliar with how to judge, judging procedures will be covered in the new competitor tutorials - another reason that attendance is critical for first-time competitors!
  • We have created the judging assignments for this competition in a way that will hopefully be a little less taxing overall than at a usual competition - you should only be assigned to judge in seven events at most, even if you are competing in more than that. You will of course also only be assigned to judge in events you are competing in so that you don't have to arrive a day or hours early solely to fulfill a judging assignment.
  • Completing your judging assignments is mandatory. Our schedule is built around all stations having a judge at all times, and if everyone fulfills their assignments then that will be the case. If we ever have a situation where a group gets underway and a stage still does not have all its judging stations full, we will look up who is assigned to judge on that stage and note one "strike" for anyone not present and judging. Three strikes for not judging accumulated throughout the competition will result in disqualification from the remainder of the competition per regulation 1e2.
  • We enthusiastically welcome anyone who wants to judge beyond the assignments, including parents and other non-competitors - it's a fun way to make the time fly by and get more involved! Please feel free to stop by the help desk at any point through the competition for a quick rundown on how to judge if you want to help out but don't yet know how to judge.
  • Your page on Competition Groups and the back of your nametag will both have your competitor ID number for this competition (not the same as your WCA ID) in the upper right corner. We ask that you sign scorecards as a judge using this ID number, not your initials. (However, any non-competitors judging such as parents or siblings should still use their initials since they do not have an ID number.)

Locating the Venue

  • There should be sufficient parking between the main parking lot for Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium (385 N Church St) and the adjoining arts center parking lot (151 Memorial Dr). If both of these are full, you can park across the street at the Spartanburg County Admin Offices.
  • The competition is taking place in the lower-level Hall space at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. This space is accessed from the lower-level entrances near the parking lot, not the upper-level streetside entrance, as shown below:

Entering the Venue and Checking-In

  • The venue will be conducting a bag check for all attendees every time they enter - prohibited items include:
  • Knives and weapons
  • Outside food/beverage, including ice chest coolers
  • "Distraction items" such as noisemakers, laser pointers, balloons, and selfie sticks
  • We expect that this bag check will result in significant lines to enter the venue in the morning. We recommend budgeting enough time to get through a line if one arises, and proceeding immediately from bag check to competition check-in to get both major line-waiting activities out of the way all at once as early as possible.

Logistics in the Venue

  • The main floor of the competition will contain the competition stages (including rows of chairs for spectators who want to watch close-up), a few dozen round tables for competitors, and the concession stand. There will also be upper-level bleacher seating overlooking the main floor from the left and right side - two competition stages are visible from each side. We recommend keeping in mind the following usage patterns to minimize crowding:
  • round tables - competitors who are actively socializing/practicing
  • close-up chairs - spectators actively spectating a specific competitor/round
  • upper-level bleachers - spectators/non-competitors passively spectating/not spectating, and competitors not actively socializing/practicing
  • The concession stand in the main competition area will be available from 10am to 6pm each day of the competition, and a small selection of breakfast items will also be available beginning as early as 7:30am. There will also be a side concession stand elsewhere in the venue offering non-meal items such as smoothies, coffee, etc. Both of these concession stands are cashless; all purchases must be made with a card.
  • As mentioned previously, outside food/beverage will not be allowed through bag check - if you plan to eat in the venue, then, you should be ready to rely on the concession stand. You are more than welcome to leave the venue for lunch and eat at any of the restaurant options in the area, but keep in mind you will not be able to bring any food back into the venue. Per venue advice, empty water bottles and any food/beverage connected to a dietary (allergy) or religious requirement will still be allowed.
  • Considering the expected attendance at our event, we will need to be proactive to minimize lines at the concession stand. We strongly recommend heading to the concession stand for lunch as soon as your last assignment for the morning is completed - this will spread out concessions purchases throughout the late morning/early afternoon instead of having hundreds of people rush the stand at once when lunch officially begins.

Apparel Theme Days

Each day of the competition, we encourage all competitors to wear a specific kind of apparel in order to build community and add a little extra fun to the event. Here are our themes:

  • Friday: wear your favorite shirt from a past competition! (If you haven't competed before or have never gotten a competition shirt, you can wear any cubing-themed shirt for the theme.)
  • Saturday: wear apparel that represents your state! This could be something related to a sports team, a college, a famous landmark, or just anything that shows off what state you're from.
  • Sunday: wear the official SEC24 apparel! Please note that the only way to get this apparel was to pre-order it before the deadline - there will NOT be any extras for last-minute purchase at the competition.

Information for First Time Competitors

  • All first-time competitors must attend one of the new competitor tutorials before competing. There will be one on Friday morning at 9:15AM and another on Saturday morning at 7:45AM - the content will be identical for both and you only have to attend one. We will make announcements in the venue at those times directing you exactly where to go for the tutorials. The tutorials will start promptly at the scheduled times, so if you arrive even a couple minutes late or are still busy checking in, you will miss out on important information that you need in order to compete.
  • We highly suggest that all competitors (first-time or not) check in during one of the official check-in periods (7:30AM-9:15AM on Friday and 7:00AM-7:45AM on Saturday). We will have check-in available at the help desk outside those hours if necessary, but please keep in mind the requirement to attend a new competitor tutorial before competing. You should aim to arrive and check in as early as possible within the check-in period to ensure you are not still stuck in line when the tutorial begins. And of course, you only need to check in once for the entire competition - you do not need to wait through the line on multiple days.
  • We request that all first-time competitors bring some form of legal identification to present during check-in. We are looking for documentation that shows the competitor's name, birth date, and nationality (if representing a country besides the United States). This will be used to verify that the name, birth date, and nationality listed on your WCA account are accurate before your first set of official results are uploaded after this competition. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please reach out ASAP to discuss.

Information for 3x3 Multi-Blind Competitors

  • Cube submission for Multi-Blind will take place during the first 10 minutes of lunch on Friday (11:40AM-11:50AM). You must submit your cubes to be scrambled during that window of time - you will not be allowed to compete in Multi-Blind when the event begins at 12:20PM if you did not submit your cubes during the submission window.
  • You will submit your cubes at the specific stage where you are assigned to compete in Multi-Blind. You can look up your name on this competition's Competition Groups page and find your stage assignment now so you are aware of where you will need to submit.
  • Once you officially submit your cubes, you are locked in to attempting that exact number - you cannot decide at the last minute before your attempt to add or subtract puzzles from the count.

Questions

If after reading all the above information and you still have questions, please contact us here

All Attendees (Spectators/Families)

  • All spectators are welcome to attend this event for free without any prior registration. However, please keep in mind that all attendees must pass through a bag check to enter the venue and will not be allowed to carry any weapons or outside food inside.
  • We enthusiastically welcome all non-competitors who want to assist with judging during the competition! It's a wonderful way to support the event that your child or loved one enjoys and make the time fly by as well. If you have never judged before, just attend the new competitor tutorial and/or visit the HAelp Desk for a personal tutorial during the competition. But once you are trained in judging, you are welcome to take a judging seat at any open station at any time!

All Competitors

  • Please declare your residency on CubingUSA by logging in to the CubingUSA website, editing your account and setting your home state before Sunday, June 9, 2024 at 8:00 PM EDT/7:00PM CDT. This information will be used both to determine who is eligible for Southeast Champion titles and also to provide custom competition materials to you based on your home state.
  • All competitors will have judging assignments throughout the day in addition to their competing assignments. These judging assignments are mandatory, and competitors who repeatedly miss their assignments can be subject to disqualification from the rest of the competition under WCA Regulation 1e2. Any competitor who does not yet know how to judge will need to attend the new competitor tutorial and/or visit the HAelp Desk for a personal tutorial before their first judging assignment.
  • Please plan to be present in the venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of each event you are competing in to ensure you do not miss your group. If you miss your group, you may not be able to compete in the event.
  • If you have to leave the competition early and miss any subsequent round that you have qualified for, please notify the HAelp Desk before leaving so your spot can be offered to the next-fastest competitor.

New Competitors

  • We will have new competitor tutorials at 9:30am on Friday and 7:45am on Saturday. You must attend one of these tutorials before competing in your first event in order to learn the competing and judging processes.
  • The WCA Competitor Tutorial video linked below is highly recommended viewing for both new competitors and their families before the competition in order to know what to expect ahead of time. It will also give you a solid foundation to learn the additional information that will be presented at the in-person tutorial.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Do I use my own cubes to compete?
  • A: Yes, you are responsible for providing your own puzzles. Be sure to review Article 3 of the WCA regulations and confirm that your puzzles are competition legal before the event. Some examples of non-legal puzzles are electronic cubes (such as Giiker, GOcube, or GAN356i), cubes with carbon fiber stickers, cubes with more than one logo, and cubes with significantly damaged or missing stickers/pieces.
  • Q: Do I use my own timer to compete?
  • A: No, all equipment for the competition (timers, displays, etc.) is provided by the organizers/delegates.
  • Q: How fast do you have to be to compete?
  • A: As long as you are able to solve the puzzle within the time limit listed on the Events tab, you are fast enough to compete!
  • Q: What will the average age of competitors be?
  • A: Most competitors are between 10 and 25 years old, with the average age usually falling in the mid-teens. However, all ages are welcome - everyone can and should cube!
  • Q: Are competitors divided by gender or age?
  • A: No, all competitors compete in the same division on the same even playing field.
  • Q: Why am I not on the competitor list yet? I already signed up and paid!
  • A: Registrations are approved manually, so it may take some time for the organizers to see and accept your registration. Also, if registration is already full when you register and pay, you will be placed on the waiting list instead. If you still do not see your name on the competitor list or waiting list 48 hours after submitting payment, please reach out via the "Contact Organization Team" link on the General Info tab.
  • Q: How do I change my events or cancel my registration?
  • A: Please reach out via the "Contact Organization Team" link on the General Info tab and an organizer or delegate will handle your request. Please note that no refunds, cancellations, event changes, etc. will be processed after the deadlines listed on the General Info tab under "Registration Requirements".
  • Q: How do I know when exactly I will be competing?
  • A: To see what time each event you are competing in takes place, check the Schedule tab. At the competition, your personal nametag that you receive at check-in will list which group you are assigned to compete in for each event. Each group competes in order - group 1, then group 2, and so on. Please be familiar with which group you are in and pay attention as they are called up throughout the day - you may not be able to compete if you miss your group.
  • Q: What do I do while I'm not competing?
  • A: In addition to your competing group assignments, you will also have judging assignments throughout the day. The WCA is a volunteer-based organization, and everyone has to chip in a little bit to make sure the competition is a success! You are welcome and encouraged to judge as much as you want, even beyond your assignments - it's a fun way to get right up in the middle of the action. When you're not judging or competing, though, you'll probably want to hang out at the tables with other cubers and make some new friends!
  • Q: Where do I find my results during the competition?
  • A: During the competition, you can see results on WCA Live as they are entered. Please note that all results are entered by hand and there may be delays depending on the availability of staff to enter data.
  • Q: How will I know if I made it to the next round?
  • A: Once a round is completely entered on WCA Live, the competitors whose names are highlighted will be the ones moving on to the next round. To check if the round is actually complete, scroll down to the bottom and see if all listed competitors have results. If there are competitors without results, the round is not completely entered yet and the next round has not been finalized.
  • Q: Where do I find my results after the competition?
  • A: Within a week of the end of the competition, the results of the competition will be uploaded on the main WCA website and will appear on your WCA profile. You will receive an email notification when this happens.
  • Q: Who do I ask if I have a question about the competition not answered here?
  • A: You can always reach out via the "Contact Organization Team" link on the General Info tab and we'll get back to you shortly!

Location

Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium - The Hall at SMA
385 N Church Street
Spartanburg, SC 29303

Please note that the entrance for the The Hall is not the front entrance that faces the street (highlighted in red below) - this takes you to the venue's auditorium space, which is not a part of the competition. The entrance for the competition is on the side of the building as you walk from the main parking lot to the street, as highlighted in green below:

Parking

Free parking is available at the venue's parking lot (385 N Church St) and the adjoining arts center parking lot (151 Memorial Dr). If these parking lots are both full, parking is also available at the Spartanburg County Admin Building across the street.

Please refer to the venue website as needed for more information on parking.

Lodging

Spartanburg's tourism agency, OneSpartanburg, has generously provided us with a hotel discount flyer which you can use to book from a variety of Spartanburg hotels at 10-15% off their usual rates. Visit the flyer link and click on the hotel logos to be taken to the discounted booking page for that hotel. The two nearest hotels to the venue are the AC Hotel and the Marriott, both of which are within walking distance. If any other hotel deals/discounts become available, we will update this page, notify all registered competitors, and make announcements on Southeast Cubing social media.

Restaurants

There will be a concession stand open at the venue to provide food on-site. There are also a variety of restaurant options in downtown Spartanburg walking distance from the venue as well as fast food options within a few minutes' drive. Please note that outside food is not allowed in the venue; if you get food from anywhere besides the venue concession stand, you will need to eat it before returning to the venue.

Air Travel

The nearest major airport to Spartanburg is Greenville-Spartanburg International, located less than 30 minutes away. Charlotte Douglas International, located a little over an hour away, is another option with significantly more destinations and flight options.

We will be awarding Southeast Regional Champion titles in each event to the highest-ranked competitor from CubingUSA's Southeast region, which is defined as the following states:

CubingUSA Southeast FMC Championship 2024

The podium from CubingUSA Southeast FMC Championship 2024 will be recognized during the awards ceremony at CubingUSA Southeast Championship 2024 to crown our Southeast FMC Champion!

The staff application is closed and all staff applicants have been informed of their acceptance status.

Expectations for Staff

  • Most staff will spend the majority of their time during the competition performing scrambling and running duties on one or more assigned stages of the competition. You will be expected to proactively fill in those roles as you see them become available throughout the day, and also follow the directions of the stage lead delegates to take on other tasks such as judging as needed.
  • Some staff will have assignments on the HAelp Desk/Data Team. While performing this role, you will assist with answering questions from attendees, handling check-in, providing new competitor tutorials, performing data entry and double-checking entered results, printing and sorting scorecards for subsequent rounds of the competition, and other tasks as needed when directed to do so by the stage leads for HAelp Desk/Data Team.
  • Staff will have breaks in their assignments in order to compete in their registered events and will also be able to take breaks as needed as long as the stage lead delegates are made aware.
  • If you will only be available for certain parts of the competition or are only interested in staffing for certain events/rounds, you can apply to be a partial staff member and receive reduced benefits accordingly.
  • We expect all staff applicants for this competition to have some form of previous official staffing experience or at least have regularly helped out significantly at multiple previous competitions.

Apparel Orders

Apparel orders are now closed. Pre-ordered apparel must be picked up during competitor check-in on Saturday morning at 7am. No additional apparel will be for sale at the competition.
