Adding/Dropping Events

  • Competitors may request (by email) to be added to more events BEFORE registration closes.
  • Competitors may not add events after registration closes.
  • Competitors may request (by email) to remove events from their registration. It is also acceptable to not show up for any event you do not wish to compete in. If there is a chance you will want to do an event, you should register for it!

Waitlist Policies

If registration fills up, we will place competitors on a waitlist. In order to get on the waitlist, you must register and pay. You are not on the waitlist until you pay the registration fee. If you do not make it off of the waitlist, you will be fully refunded. If a competitor drops out, the first person on the waitlist will replace them. People can be replaced up until June 18th, 2021, 6:30 AM MDT. No competitors will be added on the day of the competition.

Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to register for this competition or to join the waiting list. We have received numerous requests to re-open the waiting list, and would like to address them publicly here.

Registration for this competition filled in November 2020, and there is currently a waiting list of more than 100 people who have paid with the hope of getting to compete. Additionally, the chance that this competition will be able to happen whatsoever is not high due to the prolongation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We understand that cubing competitions is something that brings many competitors motivation, purpose, and community. Rest assured that competitions will return, full-fledged, but perhaps after much longer than we would like. We miss comps, too.

As this is the Western Championship, we will be recognizing Western Champions for each event. We will recognize as the Western Champion the top finisher from one of these states and territories:
American Samoa
Arizona
California
Colorado
Guam
Hawaii
Nevada
Northern Mariana Islands
Utah

This is the third annual CubingUSA Western Championship, part of a series of Regional Championships supported by CubingUSA. The goal of these competitions is to allow competitors from all over the country to compete for regional titles. The Western region is comprised of the above states and territories.

While only residents of the western region are eligible to win the title of Western Champion, residents from everywhere are welcome to compete. While usually CubingUSA Regional Championships also serve as qualifying competitions for CubingUSA Nationals, there is no CubingUSA Nationals in 2020. We instead invite competitors to come to Western Championship 2020 and, furthermore, to the inaugural WCA North American Championship 2020 in Toronto!

Parking Locations can be found here.

Air Travel: The Provo Airport is 4 miles from the competition venue.
The Salt Lake City International Airport is 49 miles from the competition venue.

Public Transit: There are three public transit options offered by the Utah Transit Authority.
FrontRunner is a light rail system that goes from downtown Salt Lake City directly to Provo. It is unfortunately not available on Sundays, but is a cheap and fast way to get from the SLC airport to Provo.
The TRAX Green Line runs directly from the SLC airport through the Salt Lake Valley to Provo. It runs seven days a week.
There are also local busses that can be used in Provo.

Travel from the SLC Airport to Provo: One good public transit option is to take the TRAX Green Line (704) from the airport to the North Temple Station. There, transfer to the southbound FrontRunner (750) and ride to the Provo Station. Both the 850 and 834 bus lines go from the Provo FrontRunner Station to the competition venue and the surrounding area.

Travel from Provo to the SLC Airport (Sunday): Take the 850 bus line north to the Draper Town Center Station. Transfer to the TRAX Blue Line (701). At the Arena Station, exit the blue line and board a Green Line (704) train.

For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!

We wanted to let you know this event is perfectly fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...

First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations, found here:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/

This video will explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know, however competitors are still responsible for undertanding the full WCA Regulations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPL3eV-A0ww&t=2s

If you have any questions after this video, we will be having a new competitor tutorial, Saturday morning of the competition. That would be the perfect time to ask those questions and clear up any confusion.

If you are stoked to compete and ready to sign up, head over to the registration tab, click register, and fill out the information it asks for. This will help you get set up the WCA's system and one step closer to your first official solve!

FAQ

Q: Do I use my own cube to compete?
A: YES! You are responsible for your own hardware in order to compete, however, we will have a vendor at this competition, from which you can buy puzzles if your current ones have seen better days.

Q: What is the normal age of competitors at these events?
A: All ages are welcome, but in general competitors are between 10 and 20 years old. Don't let this stop you though, everyone can and should cube!

Q: What is the competition like?
A; Competitions are a bunch of tables where nerds like us get to sit and discuss our favorite thing, Cubes! Of course in addition there is competing, which will occupy one side of the competition hall, where you will see lots of timers flickering with contestants new personal bests, and a vendor, where you can purchase all you cubing related needs. Most competitions have a break for lunch, and the competing is split up into heats, as to better organize who competes when. (Check the Groups tab and listen at the competition for more info on this.)

Q: How do I find results?
A: All results are posted on the WCA page a couple of days after the competition finishes. However, during the competition go to WCA Live to find information about current results. This is also where you will find information about upcoming rounds of events.

Q: Why am I not on the registration list yet?
A: Make sure you pay you entrance fee in order to be automatically placed on the registered list, which will also guarantee you a spot in the competition. If payment may be any issue, or you are not sure if you can attend, use the contact button to talk to us, and see if we can work out another payment strategy, or have you pay on arrival at the compeition. No matter what you situation may be however, please register online. It is much easier for us to have you register now and pay later, then to have to input information at another time.

Q: Are there age divisions?
A: Nope! All cometitors compete in the same group.

Q: Can I have fun at this event?
A: HECK YES! Cubing is amazing, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the competition!
