In addition to a competitor limit for the whole competition, each event will have a separate limit. Registrations will be considered in the order that they are paid. If your paid registration includes events which have filled up, your registration will be accepted and modified to include only events which have space. Then, you will be placed on a waitlist for each full event you requested. Waitlisted competitors will be added if space becomes available until the waitlist closes on December 6.
Once your registration is accepted, you will not be able to change your registered events unless you contact the organizers. If you would like to add an event after registering, your request will be approved if there is space; otherwise, you will be placed on the waitlist. Requests to drop events are permitted until the deadlines on the General info page.
Click here to view your registration or waitlist status for each event.
The entire competition will have a limit of 150 competitors. Pyraminx and Skewb will have a limit of 80 competitors. 3x3x3 One-Handed, Clock, and Square-1 will have a limit of 60 competitors. The registration fee for competitors is $35. All competitors must read the WCA Regulations. Competitors competing in the second day of the competition should pay particular attention to Article B: Blindfolded Solving. Additionally, all competitors should read the Competitor Limits Per Event tab to understand the unusual structure of this competition.
All events will take place in the Bruin Reception Room on Level 2 of Ackerman Union.
We'd like to emphasize that competitors of all experience levels are welcome to compete! We recommend new competitors attend the Competitor Tutorial at 9:30 AM on Saturday, December 10.
Please feel free to reach out to the organization team if you have any questions.
For those of you new to cubing, WELCOME!
We wanted to let you know this event is perfectly fine for cubers of any age and experience. We just ask you know a couple things before coming to compete...
First, please be familiar with the WCA Regulations, found here:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/regulations/
This video will explain most of what any cuber competing for the first time will need to know. However, it is still the competitors responsibility to be familiar with the full set of regulations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPL3eV-A0ww
If you have any questions after watching this video, we will be having a new competitor tutorial at 9:30 AM on Saturday, December 10. That would be the perfect time to ask those questions and clear up any confusion.
Head over to the registration tab, if you are ready to sign-up for your first competiton! Click register, and fill out the information that it asks for. This will help you get set up into the WCA's system and one step closer to your first official solve!
Q&A:
Q: Do I use my own cube to compete?
A: YES! You are responsible for your own hardware in order to compete.
Q: What is the normal age of competitors at these events?
A: All ages are welcome, but most competitors for non-blindfolded events are between 10 and 20 years old. Don't let this stop you though; everyone can and should cube!
Q: What is the competition like?
A; Competitions are a bunch of tables where nerds like us get to sit and discuss our favorite thing, cubes! Of course in addition there is competing, where you will see lots of timers flickering with contestants new personal bests. Most competitions (including this one!) have a break for lunch, and the competing is split up into groups, as to better organize who competes when. (Check the Groups tab and listen at the competition for more info on this.)
Q: How do I find results?
A: All results are posted on the WCA page a few days after the competition finishes. During the competition, search "WCA Live" (https://live.worldcubeassociation.org) to find information about results of completed rounds. This is also where you will find information about who made it to 2nd and 3rd rounds of events.
Q: Why am I not on the registration list yet?
A: Make sure you pay your registration fee in order to be automatically placed on the registered list, which will also guarantee you a spot in the competition. If payment may be an issue, or you are not sure if you can attend, use the contact button on the "Info" page to talk to us, and see if we can work out another payment strategy, or have you pay on arrival at the compeition. No matter what your situation may be, please register online. It is much easier for us to have you register now and pay later than to have to input information at another time.
Q: Are there age divisions?
A: Nope! All competitors compete in the same group.
Q: Can I have fun at this event?
A: HECK YES! Cubing is amazing, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the competition!
If you are sick with COVID-19 and/or if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you may not attend this competition. Competitors must follow the CDC guidelines on quarantine and isolation; do not attend during your quarantine or isolation period. If you have already paid the registration fee and you cannot attend due to COVID-19, please contact the competition organizers for a full refund. In accordance with UCLA's COVID protocols, indoor masking is strongly recommended for all attendees.
Click here for a map of campus, including parking structures. Parking Structures P4 and P7 are located near the venue. The cost for one day of parking at P4 and P7 is $14. For more information about costs and payment methods, see the "Parking Rates by Location" and "How to Pay" sections here.
Alternatively, consider taking a bus to campus. LA Metro, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, and Culver CityBus all operate routes to UCLA. Consult Google Maps for transit options.
Guests are permitted at no extra charge. As with all attendees, guests are required to read the COVID-19 Safety tab.
Since Fewest Moves Challenge (FMC) and blindfolded events require significant levels of concentration, all attendees (including guests) are required to be silent in the Bruin Reception Room during these events. Attendees are free to talk in the Bruin Reception Room during all other events. Note that since the second day of the competition is exclusively blindfolded events, it will not be as spectactor friendly as the first day, but guests are still welcome to attend.
Ackerman Union (the building where the competition is located) has several restaurants that are open on weekends. For a list of restaurants on campus, click here; see the section "ASUCLA Restaurants - Central Campus" for restaurants in Ackerman Union. The hours are updated weekly, so check the page again a few days before the competition.
We'll be holding an unofficial event, 3x3x3 Team-Blind, after lunch on Sunday, December 11. Competitors who compete in 3x3x3 Team-Blind will be required to judge for that event.
Click here to register for 3x3x3 Team-Blind. If you don't have a teammate yet, we'll try our best to match you with another competitor before the competition. We will send updates and teammate assignments to the email you provide on the form.
Here are some details about the event:
- Format: Best of 3
- Cumulative time limit: 10 minutes
- Competitor limit: 24 (12 teams)
Q&A:
What's 3x3x3 Team-Blind, and how does it work?
3x3x3 Team-Blind is a team event in which two competitors collaboratively solve a 3x3x3 cube. One competitor, the "solver", is blindfolded during the entire solve, while another competitor, the "caller", can see the cube but can't touch it during the solve. The solver applies moves to the cube, while the caller tells the solver what moves to apply to solve the cube.
Is there inspection?
Yes, there's a 15-second inspection period before the solve just like with most official events. Both the caller and the solver may touch the cube during inspection, but the solver must put on their blindfold before inspection begins.
Can the solver talk?
Yes, both the solver and the caller can talk to each other during inspection and the solve.
Can teammates switch roles between solves?
Yes. The solver for one solve can be the caller for the next solve, and vice versa.
What's an unofficial event?
An unofficial event is any event that the World Cube Association doesn't recognize rankings for. In other words, it's just for fun!
This competition will be sponsored by TheCubicle! They will be providing gift-card prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in every event. They will not be selling puzzles onsite.
Gift card prizes will be given out to all who place in the top 3 of each event.
Time limit
If you reach the time limit during your solve, the judge will stop you and your result will be DNF (see Regulation A1a4).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced (see Regulation A1a2).
A cumulative time limit may be enforced across rounds (see Guideline A1a2++).
Cutoff
The result to beat to proceed to the second phase of a cutoff round (see Regulation 9g).
Format
The format describes how to determine the ranking of competitors based on their results. The list of allowed formats per event is described in Regulation 9b. See Regulation 9f for a description of each format.
